Dengue fever is a mosquito borne disease caused by the dengue virus. When a mosquito bites an already infected person, the virus enters the mosquito and when the same mosquito bites another person, the virus enters that person’s bloodstream.
Once infected, humans become the main carriers and multiplier of the virus, serving as a source of the virus for uninfected mosquitoes.
The virus circulates in the blood of the infected person for 2 – 7 days with a maximum of 12 days and for the same duration the person suffers from fever. Duration varies from person to person.
Symptoms typically begins with high grade fever after couple of days of infection.
Symptoms may also include:
– Flat rash over most of the body after fever starts.
– A second rash may appear which looks like measles later on
– Severe abdominal pain or tenderness
– Pain behind the eyes and/ or Headache
– Muscle, bone, and joint pain
– Persistent vomiting
– Mucosal bleed
– Restlessness
– Liver enlargement
– Rapid decrease in platelet count
In case of ignorance, dengue fever can damage the Lungs, Liver or Heart. Also BP can drop to dangerous levels, causing serious issues. So, be cautious if you develop a fever with any of the above symptoms see a Doctor immediately and get the required tests done at your doorsteps.
